The Mubadala World Tennis Championship is one of the most popular off-season tennis exhibition tournaments, which was first held in 2009. The tournament is played at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Despite not being an official ATP tournament, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship has always managed to attract a very strong field of players, and the fact that Andy Murray won the first edition of the tournament after beating Rafael Nadal in the final just proves that.
The Spanish player is actually the most successful tennis player in the history of the tournament, winning five trophies while beating five different opponents in the final - Robin Soderling, Roger Federer, Milos Raonic, David Goffin, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
One of his main rivals, Novak Djokovic, won the tournament four times, beating David Ferrer in the final twice, Nicolas Almagro, and also Kevin Anderson, who is the 2017 champion of the tournament.
The women's tournament was first held in 2017, but in a slightly different format. While in the men's event, fans could enjoy a proper draw with six players, women's tournament saw only one match being played, the final between the only two invited players.
In spite of that, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship always attracted two very exciting players for tennis fans, as the first edition was won by Jelena Ostapenko, who bested Serena Williams in the final match.
In 2018, the tournament organizers made the women's event even more exciting, inviting both Williams sisters, as Venus Williams beat her sister Serena. Maria Sharapova won the event in 2019, while Ons Jabeur was the champion in 2021 and 2022, beating Belinda Bencic and Emma Raducanu, respectively.
In 2020, the men's and women's tournaments were not held because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the 2022 edition of the tournament was last-ever held, as it was replaced by different off-season exhibition tournaments.
