Wawrinka Believes He May Need To Lose Weight To Regain Top Level

| by Jamie Malachy

Stan Wawrinka has revealed that he believes losing some weight may help him regain his peak form and return to the top of the game.

Wawrinka has started well in Madrid this week, kicking off his campaign with an impressive win over Maxime Cressy. During his post-match press conference with Tennis Channel, Wawrinka was asked what he needed to do to keep improving. He initially said that needs to make adjustments to his practice sessions and work on physicality.

Right now I think the game is being played a bit faster. When you get older, you need to do more to get less results. You need to practice more, you need to spend more time with the physio. You really need to enjoy that if you don’t enjoy it there's no chance you can keep playing. As I say, I’m trying to stay competitive with the top players.

But he also went to say that in order to make that happen, he may need to be stricter about his weight control as the younger players are now so extraordinarily fit.

For that I need to try to practise as much as possible on my line, try to be as fast as possible and sometimes a bit hesitating and a bit slow with the way I’m moving. Maybe I need to lose 1-2 kilo also to feel much better on the court.

The 3-time Grand Slam champion has endured a long and laborious journey back from injury, with several set-backs along the way.

When at his scintillating best though, Wawrinka could beat anyone on any surface - something which can only be said for a very small handful of players. The Swiss will next face Monte-Carlo champion Andrey Rublev for a place in the third round.
