Stan Wawrinka believes that Novak Djokovic will be considered the greatest tennis player of all time.
35-year-old Djokovic won his 22nd career Grand Slam after lifting his tenth Australian Open in January when the Serbian player defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. The win tied Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on 22 Grand Slam titles each, while retired Roger Federer won 20 major titles in his career.
As a result, debates have raged about who of the 'Big Three' is the greatest men's tennis player of all time. In response, when speaking ahead of his first-round defeat against Luca Van Assche at the Banja Luka, three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka made his thoughts clear on the subject.
"If you look at the results and all the parameters, I think Novak will end up as the best of all time. I consider Novak a good friend. It was always a huge challenge to play against him. I won it in the Grand Slam finals, and those are some of my most beautiful memories,"
Despite Wawrinka outlining Djokovic as his personal greatest player of all time, he did admit that it is difficult to judge between the Big Three. Instead, the 38-year-old Swiss player believes that all of the competitors should be judged after their respective retirements.
"They broke all the records between him, Rafa and Roger. They took everything and ate everything. These are the greatest players in the history of tennis. Let’s go on the GOAT, I have no problem saying things and saying what I think. It all depends on what one is looking for in this list, simply. Already I think it’s difficult to talk about athletes who are still playing. It’s always better to make a list when the players have stopped and finished their career."
