Stan Wawrinka has been confirmed as a wildcard entrant for the 2023 Madrid Open, which begins on Wednesday, April 26.
The Madrid Open announced Wawrinka and Martín Landaluce as ATP wildcard entries for the upcoming competition via its official Twitter channel. Wawrinka returns to the Spanish competition for the first time since 2019 when the Swiss player was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Rafael Nadal.
The 38-year-old will also enter the clay surface tournament and hope to reach the latter stages. Wawrinka's best appearance in Madrid came over a decade ago in 2013, when he reached the final before losing to Nadal in straight sets.
2023 has been an up-and-down season for veteran player Wawrinka. The three-time Grand Slam winner was stunned in the first round at the Australian Open in January, where he crashed out after a five-set loss to Alex Molcan.
Since then, Wawrinka has made a few impressive runs to the later stages of competitions. The Swiss player reached the quarter-finals in the Rotterdam Open and the last 16 at Indian Wells but was eliminated by Italian Jannik Sinner on both occasions.
However, Wawrinka has struggled in his last two competitions. The Swiss player crashed out in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, losing to Taylor Fritz, and he was then eliminated from the Banja Luka Open on Monday, this time suffering defeat against French player Luca Van Assche.
