For the first time in his career,
Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended an ATP trophy, but it certainly won't be the last time.
Alcaraz is up to nine titles in his career, and he'll have a decent chance to win number 10 in the coming days in Madrid. Alcaraz was the defending champion at the
Barcelona Open, and for the first time in his career,
he was able to defend his trophy.
Earlier chances this year came in Miami and Rio de Janeiro, but he wasn't able to get it done at those two events. Now, the young Spaniard was able to lift the trophy, and like last year, Alcaraz called his triumph in Barcelona a dream.
"It's been a wonderful week for me. It's a pleasure to play here in front of these fans, the end has been as we had dreamed. Playing at home, with my people supporting me, is the best. I feel very lucky."
The win at Barcelona last year cemented Alcaraz as one of the best players on the ATP Tour after he secured wins in Rio and Miami earlier in the year.
He was able to follow up on that triumph with a superb run in Madrid, and he'll certainly have a chance this year as well. It would be a huge way to celebrate a 10th career trophy on home soil. His ambition is far greater, as he confirmed during his speech.
"I am a boy who always wants more, and for this reason I work every day, to be able to win titles like the ones today. I will never be satisfied, I surround myself with ambitious people and we always want more."
The 2023 Barcelona Open was the first event back for Alcaraz after a small break following his Miami Open exit. In his own words, the key to winning was the focus, and he certainly had it in key moments.
It wasn't easy, but it was a good warm-up for Madrid, where
he's also the first seed in the draw, and conditions should favour him even more.
