To the dismay of many Italian fans,
Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the
Italian Open in Rome.
Berrettini has had an unfortunate season so far, with not a lot of tennis played. He started the year with a few good performances, but overall, it hasn’t been at the level many expected him to play.
Losing to Andy Murray at the Australian Open was particularly painful for the former Wimbledon finalist, as that’s an event where he can do some damage. The clay season has been a mixed bag for him so far as well.
Berrettini played in Monte-Carlo and looked decent, but then withdrew ahead of his match against Holger Rune. A physical issue was to blame, and it has prevented him from playing ever since.
He didn’t play in any of the events that followed, including
the Madrid Open, where he has historically played great as well. Now it’s known that he won’t play at the Italian Open either, which is unfortunate to the Italian as he’s from Rome, and he loves to play at this ATP Masters 1000 event.
If there is one event Berrettini wouldn’t want to miss, it’s the Italian Open, but luck wasn’t on his side this time. He announced the withdrawal on social media.
"I have been holding on to the hope of being able to compete in Rome, a tournament that means so much to me and where all my dreams started. However, my latest scan results show I still need at least a week before I can start training physically again."
"Withdrawing from and missing the Rome event is so so difficult, and that is all because of the Italian fans. Your support means everything and I can’t wait to be back competing in front of you again soon."
Now, the goal for Berrettini is to be ready for Roland Garros, which will conclude the clay-court part of the season. The Italian player still appears on the
entry list for the clay-court major.
