After the best period of his career, Matteo Berrettini is experiencing very rough times in 2023 as he was forced to withdraw from yet another ATP event.
This time, the Italian had to pull out from the ATP Masters 1000 clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital, the 2023 Madrid Open. It comes after he was forced to pull out of the third-round clash with Holger Rune at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, and then also withdrew from the 2023 Munich Open.
Now, the injury woes continue for Berrettini as he's not yet ready to compete. The Italian is in Spain as he works on his fitness with his team in Barcelona, but through his social media accounts, Berrettini announced that he won't be able to compete at the 2023 Madrid Open.
"The intense rehab program has begun with my medical team in Barcelona. I will do everything I can to be back competing as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I will not be able to compete in Madrid. I will keep you all updated when I have more news. Grazie for all the support."
Berrettini was supposed to also join the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev at a rapid-fire exhibition event in Madrid, the Red Bull Bassline, an event organized by the brand which sponsors him.
However, his withdrawal from the 2023 Madrid Open means that he will also miss the exhibition tournament, which will be played on April 25th at the Arantxa Sánchez Vicario Stadium.
For Berrettini a race with time starts now. He will want to be ready for the 2023 Roland Garros, a major where he played quarterfinals in 2021 but was forced to miss it last year.
Since the 2021 Roland Garros, the Italian reached at least quarterfinals at every Grand Slam that he played, but his streak was stopped at this year's Australian Open and he will surely want to start another one now to mark a new chapter of his career after an injury-plagued period.
