WATCH: Tsitsipas Hits Sensational Around-The-Net Winner At Roland Garros

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled off a mind-boggling shot at Roland Garros while defeating Diego Schwartzman.

An extraordinary spectacle unfolded at the 2023 Roland Garros, when the talented Greek pulled out one of the rarest shots in the world of tennis. The ever-creative Tsitsipas showcased a dazzling demonstration of precision and creativity during his third-round encounter against Diego Schwartzman.

The moment of magic? An unthinkable around-the-net backhand winner that left spectators, commentators, and Tsitsipas himself, absolutely spellbound. It was just one of the shots that led the Greek to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 win, but surely the most remembered one.

From the deep trenches of the court, Tsitsipas visualized and materialized a stroke that defied the very geometry of the game. With the ball well off-court and the net standing tall, one could only anticipate a defensive lob.

But Tsitsipas, who now spent 200 weeks in the Top 10 on the ATP Tour, had other ideas. He seized the opportunity, sighting a minute gap where he could spin his magic, and in a sheer moment of impromptu genius, delivered an around-the-net backhand winner that screamed defiance at the conventional norms of tennis shot-making.

After the match, the Greek, who was clearly happy about the match victory, was also asked by Mats Wilander about his incredible around-the-net winner and when he made the decision to play the shot.

"We never practice that, it was a one-off. It was the very last millisecond that I have decided, you know what, forget the net, we don't need it on that particular occasion. I saw myself really out of the court, I saw that there was a chance, there was a gap there that I could utilize to hit that shot and it just went through."

More than winning the point, it was about the satisfying feeling and beauty of the shot for Tsitsipas who admitted that he doesn't even remember when was the last time that he managed to hit a similar shot.

"It was a very good satisfying feeling, getting that winner down the line. I don't think I've done it before, or maybe I've done it in practice, I don't know. But long time that this hasn't appeared, so felt unbelievable, just like hitting a clean baseball shot, home run."
