Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev exchanged a few words in the media recently but the Russian showed he's not taking it too seriously.
In a display of lighthearted banter, Daniil Medvedev poked fun at Alexander Zverev's accusations of unsportsmanlike behavior during a net exchange with Holger Rune after their quarterfinal match at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
The Russian survived a nail-biting third-round encounter against Zverev, pulling off a dramatic 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7) victory. The match was fraught with tension, as Medvedev silenced the jeering crowd with a shushing gesture and dismantled the net post right before Zverev's crucial service game in the second set.
Disgruntled by his loss and Medvedev's on-court antics, Zverev fired back in a post-match interview, labeling Medvedev "one of the most unfair players in the world." The former World No. 2 expressed his strong commitment to fair play and sportsmanship, implying that Medvedev's tactics during the match were unfair.
However, Medvedev appeared untroubled by the German's remarks and chose to respond with humor. After falling to the young Danish talent Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4 in the Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinals, Medvedev offered a tongue-in-cheek comment during their post-match handshake at the net.
First, he approached him in the same way he was approached by Zverev and then, he congratulated Rune on his exceptional performance while jokingly accusing him of playing unfairly. "You played so good! You played unfair," Medvedev quipped to Rune, showcasing his ability to brush off criticism with a sense of humor.
