An incident occurred during the match between Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud at the 2022 Roland Garros when a spectator invaded the court and tied themselves to the net.
Cilic and Ruud were battling it out at the 2022 Roland Garros when they had to stop because of a climate protester. Both players were playing one of their best tournaments in recent months, with the spot in the final on the line.
While the Croatian managed to eliminate the likes of Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev on his way to the semi-final, Ruud showed why he's one of the best clay-court players in the world, beating Holger Rune, Hubert Hurkacz, but also retiring Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
After Cilic won the opening set 6-3, the Norwegian fought back in the second set, winning it 6-4, before one of the players was about to take the lead again in the third set of the match.
But at 4-1 and 15-15, with Ruud about to put the ball in play, a climate change protester invaded the court during the match, surprising everyone on the court, including the security, who did not seem to expect it.
Both players immediately tried to distance themselves from the protester as much as possible, as they didn't know if they could possibly be in danger or what the intentions of the person were. The protester had a message written on both sides of a white t-shirt, saying:
"We have only 1028 days left."
The play was suspended, with players escorted off the court by security. The spectator was then removed from the court, and play resumed about 15 minutes later after a brief warm-up.
It was not an ideal situation for either of the players, but after the play resumed, Ruud won the match in four sets, reaching the Roland Garros final.
