After his great run last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas set out to defend his title at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, and so far, he's successful.
The 23-year-old Greek didn't lose a single set on his way to the title last year, and this year, it can be the same story for Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, as he's cruising through the draw very comfortably.
After receiving a bye in the first round, defeating Fabio Fognini in the second and Laslo Djere in the third, Tsitsipas will face a very tough clay-court opponent, Diego Schwartzman, who will play his 16th match on clay this season.
After his third-round match against Laslo Djere, Tsitsipas assessed his performance and also praised his opponent, who, according to the Greek no. 1, "stayed consistent" and made him "work hard" for the victory.
"I knew I had to be alert. He is someone who competes very well on clay. He stays consistent and puts a lot of balls back and I really had to work hard for this win. It was important to get a good dynamic start in the tie-break and stay in rallies and take my chances when they appeared."
When the Greek had already advanced into the quarterfinals, his opponent was not yet known as Diego Schwartzman and Lorenzo Musetti were still in the middle of the 3rd set, and so when asked about his next opponent, Tsitsipas said:
“Both Schwartzman and Musetti can compete well on clay. They both have a good game for clay courts and all I have to do is be ready and show up with good mentality and do my job with passion and dedication.”
Now, he knows that it will be Schwartzman who will be his quarterfinal opponent, and to overcome the challenge from the 12th-seeded Argentinian, the Greek will need to bring the same performance as well.
