Tsitsipas Marches Into Roland Garros Third Round After Another Straightforward Win

Tsitsipas Marches Into Roland Garros Third Round After Another Straightforward Win

by Zachary Wimer

Another rain-plagued day in Paris didn't bother Stefanos Tsitsipas, who raced past Daniel Altmaier in four sets in indoor-like conditions.

Despite rain starting in the middle of the match, the Greek player didn't have to stop his match because the roof was already used at the start of the match. That in itself certainly impacted the matchup quite a bit in favor of Tsitsipas, who generally enjoys playing in indoor-like conditions.

Altmaier is a solid player, but he was no match for the ninth seed, who was very focused from the start. Getting an early break in the first set certainly helped, as the start of this match wasn't as complicated as his previous against Marton Fucsovics.

Tsitsipas found his tennis on clay this year but struggled in recent weeks, so these two wins in Paris are certainly very good for his confidence. He dominated in the first set with 14 winners compared to only six from Altmaier, and that was why he prevailed.

The German was quite a bit better last year when he stunned Jannik Sinner, but he wasn't particularly good this year. The second set didn't go that much better for him, even if he stabilized his play a bit.

He made fewer mistakes, and his serve worked relatively well, but Tsitsipas smashed 13 winners, and that was simply too much. The third set was the best one Altmaier played because he finally found that stroke.

It's the set where he outhit his higher-ranked opponent, who laid back and observed what would happen. The set ended up in a tie-break, which wasn't ideal for Tsitsipas as he had to fight for it.

Altmaier crushed him comfortably in that tie-break, winning it 7-2, but he missed out on a huge chance in the fourth set. Despite taking the first break in that set, Altmaier lost that set and the match.

Tsitsipas showed why he's such a good player in the fourth set, turning it around to win the match 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4 and reach the third round at the 2024 Roland Garros.
