Holger Rune and Stan Wawrinka had their moment in the past, and the young Dane spoke about it again.
It was November 2022 when the two met at the Paris Masters. The youngster defeated the experienced three-time Grand Slam champion, and as the two shook hands, Wawrinka told Rune to 'stop acting like a baby on court'.
A few months later, the two met again on the ATP Tour, this time at the 2023 Indian Wells. This time around, it was the Swiss who emerged victorious and the young Dane who had something to say. After the two shook hands, Rune asked if Wawrinka 'had nothing to say now'.
After the match, the Swiss veteran said that the 20-year-old is 'making a reputation for himself that he will regret', but Rune was backed by Nick Kyrgios, who had his share of disagreements with Wawrinka in the past.
It seemed that all was over when the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters started, as the two were reunited by no other than the 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Now, a few months later, Rune was asked about the situation once again in an interview with The Times.
"I was surprised. Some players when they lose, they get a little unbalanced. I guess that’s what happened."
Rune is a player who likes to leave it all on the tennis court, and if he has a negative emotion inside of him, he doesn't want to keep it trapped there. The young Dane simply releases it, and according to some that creates a bad boy image, but he disagrees.
"I think it’s very important that the fire, the belief, everything you have inside, you kind of relieve that out on the court. I think to be able to be the best version of yourself, you have to be fully yourself."
"If you try to hide it or something like that, you’re never going to feel 100 per cent comfortable. It’s very important to be yourself at all times because this is where you can perform best. This is where your body knows your brain and your brain knows your body the best."
