Stan Wawrinka has responded to his on-court feud with Holger Rune after the Swiss beat the Danish player in a heated clash at Indian Wells.

Wawrinka eventually progressed in the competition after beating Rune in three sets but the pair exchanged heated words after the contest. The players shook hands at the end of the match, but Rune told Wawrinka, "You got nothing to say now?" before the Swiss player responded, "What did you say to me?"

The latest confrontation comes after building tension between the two players, which started at the 2022 Paris Masters when Wawrinka told Rune to "stop acting like a baby". Post-match at Indian Wells, Wawrinka had further words of advice for 19-year-old Rune as the Swiss player was quoted by L'Equipe.

"We played in Bercy, I had a match point, he played well and he beat me before winning the tournament. Since then, it has really evolved. It's just that if I feel better. Opponents feel it, it gives them more doubts. He is in a particular period. Between what he does, what he wants to do, and where he is now, he is looking for himself a little."

In addition, the Swiss star praised Rune's potential but said the young player is creating a negative reputation for himself amongst the other players.

Wawrinka's remarks came after Rune had several arguments with fellow players and with umpire Mohamed Layhani in 2022.

"There is not much to say there. The only thing I can add is that he is a young player, a very great champion already with enormous potential. But he is making a reputation in the locker rooms that he will one day regret."
