The top of the men's rankings looks very familiar before the US Open begins, with Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz occupying the top three spots.
There was only one ATP tournament in the past week, and none of the Top 10 were in action, which means there were no major changes affecting the higher tier of the rankings.
Sinner, however, built on a very healthy lead over his closest rivals, Djokovic and Alcaraz. The ATP came under mounting pressure to chalk off one week as World No. 1 from the Italian's tally after his doping saga in order to award it to the Serbian.
But Sinner's points from Indian Wells (which he forfeited) following his unpublicized provisional suspension for two failed drug tests in March were not retroactively subtracted. Djokovic must wait slightly longer to add a record-extending 429th as World No. 1.
Sinner's spot as World No. 1 will not be under any threat at the US Open as he defends the fewest points of the three. In contrast, defending champion Djokovic will be under pressure to retain his top-two spot as he will lose 2000 points in the live rankings when the tournament officially begins on Monday.
Alexander Zverev (4th) will overtake Alcaraz if he matches the Spaniard's result in New York and can rise as high as second if he outperforms Djokovic. Daniil Medvedev (5th) could face a rankings slide if he doesn't reach the sharp end of the draw at the US Open.
Andrey Rublev (6th) and Hubert Hurkacz (7th) don't defend many points and will see this as an opportunity to climb the rankings. Stefanos Tsitsipas (11th) has spent several weeks outside the Top 10 and will be itching to re-enter the elite group after the US Open.
Argentina's Sebastian Baez failed to defend his title at the Winston-Salem Open and has dropped two places to 23rd. The man he beat to the title last year, Jiri Lehecka, fell six places to 38th after skipping the event.
Lorenzo Sonego is the biggest mover in the Top 50. The big-hitting Italian rises by ten spots to settle at 48th. In a year when several of his countrymen lifted ATP titles, he ensured he wasn't missing out.
Sonego was the champion in Winston-Salem this past week after thrashing Alex Michelsen 6-0, 6-3. The American is also a Top 50 player (49th) after he was very fortunate to escape a disqualification in the final for hammering a tennis ball directly at a fan.
Fabian Marozsan (51st) and Giovanni Mpetschi Perricard (52nd) both exit the Top 50. China's Shang Juncheng has attained a career-high ranking of No. 72.
The 19-year-old won eight of 11 matches during the US Open warm-up tournaments but withdrew from his round of 16 match in Winston-Salem, presumably because of injury.
Two Belgians have rejoined the Top 80 after the ATP 250 event in North Carolina. The veteran, David Goffin, motors 12 places to 78th after reaching the semifinal. Zizou Bergs, meanwhile, climbs five places to 80th. Be sure to check the latest ATP rankings before the US Open begins on our page.
