Jannik Sinner still occupies the World No. 1 position on the ATP Tour after his win at the 2024 US Open, but with a much bigger gap to the second place.
The Italian player entered the last major of the season as the highest-ranked player in the ATP Rankings, with his gap to second Novak Djokovic being almost 2,000-point, with the Serbian player behind by 1,900 points.
However, it was Djokovic who had to defend 2,000 points at Flushing Meadows, and after losing already in the third round of the tournament, he lost 1,900 out of those 2,000 points, meaning he was set for a big ranking slip.
It could see him drop to as low as the World No. 6 position, but because of the shortcomings of other lower-ranked players, the 37-year-old is the World No. 4 in the latest edition of the ATP Rankings with 5,560 points.
Sinner leads with 11,180 points, which created a massive gap to second Alexander Zverev, who has 7,075 points. The German player matches his career-high second place, but has a 4,105-point deficit to the first place.
Players around Carlos Alcaraz shifted positions, but despite losing already in the second round of the tournament, the Spanish player retained his World No. 3 place, even though he dropped a total of 670 points, with the 21-year-old now having 6,690 points to his name.
Behind the top four is another former World No. 1 player, Daniil Medvedev, who is very close to the fourth Djokovic. In fact, the Russian player is only 85 points behind the 24-time major winner, with his total currently sitting at 5,475 points.
Behind him is fellow Russian, Andrey Rublev, who has 4,645 points, and his position also didn't change. Right behind the Russian is the biggest mover in the Top 20 of the rankings.
Taylor Fritz reached his maiden Grand Slam final, and even though he lost to Sinner, he earned the most points in his tennis career, getting 1,300 for reaching the final of a major.
As a result, the American jumped up by five places all the way from outside of the Top 10 to the seventh place in the rankings, further cementing his spot as the highest-ranked player from the United States on the ATP Tour.
Another player who made a five-place move is a semi-finalist from Flushing Meadows, Jack Draper. After improving by five positions, the Brit made a Top-20 debut. The Brit reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final, and he was rewarded with 800 points for it.
The other losing semi-finalist, Frances Tiafoe, was very disappointed about his loss in New York, but if he wants to find positives, it could be his improved ranking as a result of his 800-point increase.
The 26-year-old improved by four places to reach the World No. 16 position, overtaking fellow American Ben Shelton, who couldn't defend his last year's semi-final points, meaning he dropped to the position of the American No. 5.
The latest ATP Rankings, as always after majors, experienced many shifts and minor or more significant changes, making the fight for the year-end positions even more exciting in the last weeks of the season.
