Rafael Nadal confirmed his 2022 Madrid Open participation on social media by sending a message to his fans.
The 21-time Grand Slam champion last played at the Indian Wells Open, where he lost in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament to Taylor Fritz. Nadal played that match with a cracked rib, which he sustained in the previous match against Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal.
The Spaniard was forced to abandon playing for a few weeks until the injury healed. As a result, he was forced to withdraw from multiple ATP tournaments, including the Barcelona Open, where he triumphed 12 times before.
After that, Nadal was unsure whether he would be able to play at the 2022 Madrid Open, a tournament where he also had a lot of success in the past, but now he removed any doubt as he confirmed his participation at the ATP Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital.
Posting a social media message to fans, Nadal said it was difficult to come back in time for Madrid, but the desire to play in his country and in front of his fans was too strong.
It's always special for Spanish players to play at La Caja Magica, and that's probably one of the things that motivated the 21-time major winner.
"Despite arriving just before preparation and being difficult, I really want to play and play at home since the opportunities are few. To try to do it in the best possible way. See you in Madrid."
Nadal's message really shows that his preparation for the tournament has been far from ideal, and that he probably won't even play at his best, but the Spanish player wants to play in front of the home fans, and also prepare for the Roland Garros, where he'll challenge for his 22nd Grand Slam trophy.
