Nick Kyrgios has been unstoppable in recent weeks, and he proved his incredible level again at the 2022 Canadian Open, stunning the ATP World No. 1 player, Daniil Medvedev.
Eight years ago, Kyrgios defeated Rafael Nadal at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships and recorded his first win against a player ranked in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings and also his first victory against the World No. 1 player.
Eight years later, the 27-year-old Australian defeated the World No. 1 player, this time Daniil Medvedev, for his second win over the highest-ranked player.
Kyrgios entered this match after beating Sebastian Baez in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. Medvedev, on the other hand, had a first-round bye as the top seed.
Both players were super solid on their serve in the first set. That was until the tenth game, when the Australian had two set points. Yet, Medvedev didn't fold under pressure, and the opening set of this second-round blockbuster reached the tie-break.
The Russian prevailed in the tie-break, winning it 7-2 and he hoped to continue in a similar style also in the second set. However, Kyrgios broke his serve in the first game of the second set.
Medvedev, who is also a good server, then had to try to break back. He managed to limit Kyrgios to only one ace in the second set, but he still couldn't create any break point chances, so the 2022 Wimbledon finalist won the set 6-4.
Kyrgios continued in a stunning performance also in the third set, despite being the first player to face a break point. However, he saved both of Medvedev's break points in the second game and created a few chances to break later.
He used his chances and broke the World No. 1's serve not once but twice to eventually win the match 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2. He will now play against the winner of the match between his compatriot Alex de Minaur and the fifteenth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round of the event.
