Jannik Sinner will start his 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters campaign against Sebastian Korda, who had a tremendous first match at the event.
Sinner has always been a pretty solid clay player, albeit never considered an elite one. He wasn't considered an elite player before this year either, but he certainly proved it with his recent performances, including his run at the Miami Open.
He always played well on clay in Monte Carlo, so it's going to be interesting to see what level he reaches now that he's taken a step forward. His first match will be against Korda, a tricky player who can beat anyone if he's given the chance.
It won't be easy because the American demonstrated a very high level in the first match, destroying former finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in two sets.
Head-to-head:
Sinner and Korda have played twice so far, with each player scoring one win. The first meeting happened in 2021 in Washington, and Korda won that one. The second match was played in 2023 in Adelaide, and Sinner won that one in two sets.
He's been a much better player in the past two years, and I don't think the fact that the match is played on clay will change much of that. If anything, it should benefit Sinner better because the match will be decided mostly by baseline play.
Jannik Sinner | Sebastian Korda | |
---|---|---|
1 | H2H | 1 |
2 | Rank | 27 |
22 | Age | 23 |
22-1 | 2024 W/L | 11-8 |
212-75 | Career W/L | 105-68 |
Prediction:
The Italian has been playing amazing tennis recently, limiting the mistakes he made a lot before this year. That should suit him well on clay, and unless fatigue comes in, I don't see him losing in this match.
Still, Korda who beat Carlos Alcaraz in Monte Carlo two years ago could be a real threat, but he'll need a sensational performance to trouble the world no. 2.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in two sets.
