Emma Raducanu will lose at least 40 points at this year's US Open, but the Brit could lose way more than that if she exits early.
Raducanu made a tremendous run last year at the US Open, passing the qualifiers to get into the main draw and win the event. By doing that, Raducanu earned 40 points for qualifying and 2,000 for winning the New York Slam, which means she'll lose points regardless of her performance this year.
Obviously, there is a huge difference between losing 40 and 2,000 points, but Raducanu herself isn't worried too much about it as she will adapt to the situation and start from the bottom if she needs to.
"I just lost count how many times I’ve been asked this question. If I lose 2,000 points so be it, I’ll start again from the bottom. I know I can do something that no one else has done."
"I qualified and won the US Open, so I can start from the beginning, I can start from zero and I’m not afraid of that."
For Raducanu, it's all part of the development part of her career that she missed by winning the US Open. The triumph was a surprise to many, including herself, and she's now going through the growing pains of becoming a professional tennis player who plays almost weekly.
"I just think that everything that’s happening right now has probably just meant to be in my journey and I need to go through those development stages at some point because I did miss them. I went from playing 25ks to winning the US Open."
Asked about working with coach Dmitry Tursunov, Raducanu did not share much admitting it was too early to tell.
"He’s here, we’re continuing the [coaching] trial. It’s mainly, we just need to see how we work with each other, how we compliment each other. That’s it, I guess. It’s too early to tell."
