Stefanos Tsitsipas had to dig really deep to overcome Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters and admitted he wasn't even expecting the comeback.
Friday was packed with four stunning three-set matches at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. The one between Tsitsipas and Schwartzman could be easily marked as probably the best of them.
First, the Argentinian won 9 out of 10 games to get close to victory after being 2-6, 2-5 down, but then it was Tsitsipas who won the last six games to take the victory from his opponent.
Both players had to work hard to win, but ultimately, the Greek prevailed. After the match, he analyzed his victory over the inspired Argentinian, who seemed unwilling to give up.
"There was a moment in the match where I felt what I was doing wasn’t working. He had a massive lead and momentum in what he was trying to do. I just tried to stay in the match as much as I could and that worked out very well. I wasn’t expecting much at that point being a double break down, so I relaxed at that point."
"It was extremely close. I was really close in the second set. That was the moment I had a big chance to close it out but Diego is Diego and I had to be Stefanos in the third set."
When asked about the gameplan against his semifinal opponent, Alexander Zverev, who has recently talked about being aggressive, Tsitsipas replied:
"Same like today. Just a tremendous amount of grit, determination and attention to detail. He's one of the best players and in order to perform against players like him I really need to bring the best out of my game, and take it shot after shot."
