Spain had a huge chance to secure their Davis Cup Finals spot against Canada but they failed up short thanks to the heroics of Felix Auger-Alissime who beat number one Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz arrived not long ago in Valencia after a lengthy and exhausting stay in New York. He eventually rose to become the world's best player and a grand slam champion, so it was worthwhile however, days later, against all logic, he played Felix Auger-Aliassime in what turned out to be his first match as the world's number one.
A tense three-set match that lasted almost three hours didn't go well for the Spaniard, who lost. Auger-Aliassime gave one of his best performances of the year, and he also played heroically in the doubles to help Canada defeat Spain.
Alcaraz accepted his responsability with the loss after the match:
“I didn't arrive at my best. I only had two days to adapt my game to the court, but I wanted to be here representing Spain and share this moment as number one with friends and family and also with the team.”
He'll try and help Spain win the final match and book a place in the Finals that way.
