Holger Rune vs Dominik Koepfer: 2024 Mexican Open Acapulco - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune is looking good at the 2024 Mexican Open in Acapulco, but he's also facing a very solid player, Dominik Koepfer, who is having a tremendous run.

Rune and Patrick Mouratoglou recently debuted together for the third time, and so far, it's looked pretty good. The Danish player has looked pretty decent so far in Mexico, winning two matches without too much trouble.

The upcoming match is going to be the toughest he's played yet because he's playing a really solid player. Koepfer can be tremendously tricky to play, as his most recent results have demonstrated.

The German has looked really good in recent weeks, but is he good enough to down a Top 10 talent? He might be because he's been consistently serving well and hitting his spot on the courts.

Head-to-head:

Rune and Koepfer never played against each other, and while that might be troublesome for Rune, I don't think he'll be flustered too much. Koepefer doesn't bring anything spectacularly different from any other lefty.

He has that tricky lefty wide serve that he employs to open the court up, but outside of that, it's the usual stuff. He's been finding some crazy angles this week, so Rune will need to be careful about not giving him too much.

Prediction:

Rune plays a similar style, and he's been pretty consistent from the baseline. He'll need to be that to win the match because this battle will mostly come down to who finds the winner more often and avoids too many unforced errors in the process.

Both players will rely on the serve, so that's another thing to keep an eye on. In general, though, Rune should have the upper hand in this one. Koepfer benefitted greatly from Frances Tiafoe's approach.

Their matchup was somewhat unserious to start, and by the time the American realized that Koepfer was firing on all cylinders. I don't think Rune will make the same mistake.

Prediction: Holger Rune to win in three sets.
