'He Needs To Want It': Mouratoglou Admits He Would Want To Coach Kyrgios

Patrick Mouratoglou has a pretty clear answer when asked which played he'd like to coach, and it might be a surprising name.

Mouratoglou worked with a host of great players in his career as a coach. His Academy was the breeding ground of some of the most prominent players of today, with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Coco Gauff, and the Fruhvirtova sisters all attending his academy as teenagers.

It's a popular spot for players to practice, as Daniil Medvedev uses it often. It even serves as the place where Novak Djokovic traditionally prepared for the Paris Masters.

The Frenchman simply knows how to teach tennis, and while he's currently coaching Holger Rune, there is a player whom he'd like to coach in the future.

It's none other than Nick Kyrgios. Speaking to Tennis Majors, Mouratoglou laid out why he'd like to coach the Australian player.

"I think he would be one of the most exciting guys to coach. The thing is, for someone to have a coach, he needs to want it. You cannot work with a player who doesn’t want a coach. So that will be his decision one day, or maybe never, we’ll see."

Kyrgios famously said that he doesn't want or need a coach. He tried it a couple of times, but it's never worked out, as he simply prefers to do things his way. He doesn't warm up for his matches either, so doing things very differently compared to the norm is not strange for him.

Still, for Mouratoglou, it would be a great challenge as Kyrgios has tremendous potential but is always a very complicated character.

"This guy has an incredible potential. He’s complicated, he’s complex. Sometimes I think I’m not even sure he understands himself, but I think from the side watching him for so many years, I think I understand him. “I mean I’m not the only one probably, but I can feel him. I think there are a lot of very smart things to do with him a Grand Slam or more."
