Nick Kyrgios has been away from the sport for a very long time due to injuries, but he's slowly getting closer to a potential return.
Kyrgios' injury problems started at the start of last year. The Australian was supposed to play at the Australian Open but withdrew from the event just days ahead of the injury.
A knee issue kept him from playing at the event, and he embarked on a long rehabilitation for that. He seemingly overcame that and returned to the grass but played only one match, which he lost.
Wimbledon was out of the question due to a wrist injury, and we haven't really heard much from him since then. The rehabilitation is being kept quite hushed with the occasional vague update from the Australian.
He missed out on the Australian Open this year but recently confirmed during a Q and A session on Instagram that he's slowly getting closer to a return. As Kyrgios described it, the wrist is getting better every day.
"Honestly, I’m seeing improvement every day with my wrist and I’m in the middle of getting back to playing shape."
Kyrgios didn't really give a timeframe for his return but did explain that his goal is to return fully healthy. He's not going to rush it or return if he's not feeling 100 %.
"I will be back. I’m not sure the exact time frame, I will be cautious and take my time. We know what happens when I’m healthy."
If we know anything about Kyrgios, it is that he doesn't like to play on clay, so a return on clay looks very unlikely. That would mean that we won't see him until the grass season, which is likely his target as well. At least we know he's not retiring, or at least not anytime soon.
