Former ATP player Sam Querrey wouldn't be shocked to see Novak Djokovic lose early at the 2024 Roland Garros due to his bad form.
Djokovic's most recent match was played in Geneva, where he bested Tallon Griekspoor in two sets. It was a solid showing from the Serbian, certainly his best in a while and much better than the one in Rome.
The match in Rome was likely a fluke due to the bottle incident, which left Djokovic with some consequences in the following days. He's seemingly back to being fully healthy and without any issues, and it showed in his matches at the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva.
Even so, the season overall hasn't been very good. The 37-year-old is expected to go deep in Paris simply because he's one of the best in history, but his level this year certainly hasn't been good enough for something like that to happen.
It's why former player Sam Querrey wouldn't be shocked to see him lose early at the event.
"I don't know (what's going on with Djokovic). I watched his match against Tabilo (at the Italian Open). It looked like he didn't try. He lost 6-2, 6-3. He wasn't in the match mentally from the third, fourth game."
"At this point he's only concerned about the Grand Slams so I trust him to get it together mentally and be engaged and ready to go at the French Open."
Querrey made a fair point about motivation, and it's pretty clear that he's only really fully motivated for the biggest events. ATP Masters are, of course, important to him, but mostly, it's about the Grand Slams. Being motivated is one thing, but can he muster the necessary level? That's the question.
"He's never come into the French Open in the last 15, 16 years having such terrible results. So, I'm also not surprised if he loses early to, you know, a player like Tabilo."
