Djokovic Moves Into Geneva Open Semi-Finals After Another Needed Win

Novak Djokovic continued his super solid run at the 2024 Geneva Open with another solid win over Tallon Griekspoor in two sets.

Griekspoor had to play two matches today because his match from yesterday was postponed due to rain. Denis Shapovalov was up a set at that time, but the Dutch player was able to turn around that match. He did need a lot of time to do that, so he didn't go into this match completely fresh.

Djokovic won comfortably in his first match in Geneva and kept up the good play today. Griekspoor doesn't like to play players like Djokovic because the Serbian counters his style of play really well. Djokovic returns really well and is quite consistent from the baseline, which is a nightmare for Griekspoor.

The opening set was a close affair because Djokovic couldn't create an advantage early on. Griekspoor kept his serve because the court in Geneva favours aggressive play, which is what Griekspoor employed early on.

The crucial point, arguably in the match, was Djokovic's service game at 4-5 when he saved multiple set points to keep himself in play. He then broke in the next game for a 6-5 lead and then hold his serve to win the opening set 7-5.

Djokovic was pretty impressive, but Griekspoor stole the show in the opening set with some amazing shots. He still wasn't able to hold his level that high, and that's when he lost the match. The focus went away after he dropped the first set, so the second one was much easier for Djokovic.

He broke immediately for the 2-0 lead and then broke once more for the 4-0 lead. The final score was 7-5 6-2 for Djokovic, who is now in the semi-final and will look to go into the final tomorrow. A title would certainly be a great confidence booster for him.
