Novak Djokovic surprisingly lost in the second round of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, but despite that, he will still stay world number 1 in the ATP Rankings.

After Novak Djokovic wasn't able to play for the majority of the 2022 season, Daniil Medvedev took his chance and became world number 1 in the ATP Rankings. However, after he failed to make good results at Sunshine Swing, he lost the place, and now it's the Serbian who rules the rankings again.

Entering the Monte-Carlo Masters, Djokovic was guaranteed to keep his world no. 1 rankings, as Daniil Medvedev wasn't taking part in the event and also was dropping more points this week than the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

However, Djokovic still wanted to do well at the tournament, but that surprisingly didn't happen. In his first match at the tournament, which was a second-round match, the Serbian lost to an inspired Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who proved to be just too good to overcome.

However, despite losing already his first match at the event, the 20-time major winner will remain world number 1 for another week and get another chance to improve his position before the Russian player returns from an injury.

With Medvedev not spending any time on the tennis court yet, it seems that Djokovic may extend his stint as the world no. 1. The Russian is not defending many points during the clay-court season, but still, he won't be able to add any, and that will significantly hinder his chances to reclaim the world no. 1 spot.

On the other hand, Djokovic now probably doesn't focus on the top spot in the ATP Rankings, but rather on his form as he wants to return to winning ways. With the 2022 Roland Garros right around the corner, the Serbian will want to challenge Rafael Nadal, who currently has one more Grand Slam title to his name than his rival.
