Novak Djokovic has confirmed that it was a mutual decision to part ways with former coach Goran Ivanisevic, but he is excited about his current coaching relationship.
It has now been two weeks since the tennis world was left stunned by Djokovic's decision to split with Ivanisevic. This was after one of the most successful partnerships in the sport's history, including Djokovic winning 12 Grand Slams.
Despite Ivanisevic no longer being in Djokovic's team, the respect the two share is very clear. For example, Ivanisevic would always back Djokovic to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner if he was at his best.
The 2001 Wimbledon champion also recently gave an interesting insight into Djokovic's mentality. Ivanisevic described how the Serbian liked to sometimes have an 'us against the world' mindset to help himself thrive as much as possible.
In an interview during the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters on the Tennis Channel, Djokovic was asked about the news of his split from Ivanisevic and confirmed it was a mutual decision.
"It was that kind of a mutual decision to go separate ways but the kind of success and records that we broke and achievements we made remains forever in the history of the sport, so I'm very proud to be his player and for him to be my coach for six years."
Although his gratitude to Ivanisevic is clear, Djokovic is also excited for the future. At the moment, he is working with eight-time Grand Slam doubles champion Nenad Zimonjic. Djokovic described how that dynamic has worked so far.
"I'm excited to embark on a new journey. I think Zimo brings something new and something fresh for me, his kind of angle and perspective and observation of my game is really interesting to witness."
"I've known him for many years, he was always a mentor and someone who was helping me out, a friend. So, he knows my game really well."
It will be fascinating to see how long Zimonjic continues to work with Djokovic and if it could become a long-term partnership.
