Justine Henin suggested that Novak Djokovic might be suffering from an emotional rollercoaster he's been on.
The past few months on the ATP Tour were definitely not the same as before for Novak Djokovic, who has experienced many unusual things, including disqualification from the 2020 US Open and not being allowed to play in the 2022 Australian Open.
However, the Serbian world number 1 returned at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and despite losing in his first match, he had some very bright moments. In the latest Eurosport France's 'DiP Impact' podcast, former WTA world no. 1 discussed the Serbian's season.
After Djokovic's shocking loss, seven-time Grand Slam champion, Justine Henin suggested that there might be more behind his exit than only a stunning performance of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
"We can't under-estimate the emotional roller-coaster he has been on. Not just the Australian Open and not just all the effort he made to try and win his 21st Grand Slam at the 2021 US Open either."
The former Belgian player didn't look only at the deportation from Australia but also at the 2020 US Open, where Djokovic was disqualified after accidentally hitting one of the line umpires.
"But you can also go back to the US Open in 2020 when he was disqualified. From there, he then had the tough final defeat to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros. Then he had the abdominal injury and his somewhat miraculous win at the Australian Open in 2021."
"I'm not saying all this is going to have an impact on the rest of his career, but he's got to digest and recover from all of that. And these are factors that have got to be taken into account when we talk about him now. But I think he's going to recover and we'll once again sooner or later see the Djokovic of old, so I'm not too worried at this stage."
