Juan Martin del Potro has once again teased the possibility of coming out of retirement to feature at the 2023 US Open.
Del Potro has not played competitive tennis since the 2022 Argentina Open when he was eliminated in the first round by compatriot Federico Delbonis. The Argentinian player then retired from the professional game, but he has dropped several hints at a possible return to the court in the past 18 months.
Also, the 34-year-old recently hinted at giving the US Open one more shot before officially stepping back from tennis for good. Del Potro won the 2009 US Open and reached the final in 2018 and he told Argentinian news outlet Pangina12 that he would love to have more chance to play at Flushing Meadows if his body allows it.
"With the US Open I have an internal desire that is to step on the court for the last time and play a worthy game. My health sends me messages that are not compatible with that desire. If in a month the body tells me that I can't do it, that I choose another way to close my career, I'm going to listen to it. But every day I get up to fulfill my wish until I have to make an announcement,"
Although, the former world number three admitted that a return to professional tennis could prove challenging. Del Potro explained his jealousy when watching players compete at the 2023 Roland Garros, but he also believes he has to be sensible with his physical condition.
"This challenge is different from the previous ones. Today I do not have a super happy life, because I see Roland Garros and I want to play, but I have to listen to my physique and accept that the body makes me look for another path in life,"
