Carlos Alcaraz will not compete at the 2022 Cinch Championships, which will be held at London's Queen's Club, because of an injury.
The prestigious ATP 500 tournament will run from June 13th to 19th, and it is a staple for the short grass-court swing every year in the leadup to the third Grand Slam of 2022 at Wimbledon.
In recent weeks, Alcaraz's popularity has soared after a breakout season on the main stage. They say when you are good enough, you are old enough. And the Spaniard has not let age be a barrier to his breakthrough on the ATP Tour since his debut in 2020.
This season, he has collected titles in Rio, Miami, Barcelona, and, most recently, Madrid. He has risen to inside the world's Top 10 for the first time in his young career, and right now, there is no ceiling to what he can achieve in the future.
That is because he's got a bright future in the sport and has charmed tennis fans with his smile, infectious energy, and, most importantly, his tennis skillset. He has already received special praise from some of his competitors, including World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and his idol Rafael Nadal.
At this year's Roland Garros, he reached the quarterfinals and confirmed his clay-court qualities. After the second Grand Slam of the year, he immediately started preparing for the Wimbledon.
Alcaraz was supposed to play the Cinch Championships in the Queen's Club, where he would have been one of the top favorites to win the title despite his inexperience on the lawns.
However, he announced that he will not play the tournament due to an elbow issue and it is unclear if this will jeopardize his participation at Wimbledon. He has promised to make it up next year by playing at Queen's.
"As u all know, I was super excited to play at Queen's but a slight elbow issue means I can't! I hope to be there in 2023... see u all in the UK in a few days!"
