Andy Murray vs Matteo Berrettini: 2024 Miami Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Andy Murray might be retiring this summer, but the Brit is still fighting for wins, and he'll take on Matteo Berrettini at the 2024 Miami Open.

The Miami Open draw was conducted recently, and it delivered some pretty spectacular first-round and also possible second-round matchups. The former world no. 1 and former Wimbledon finalist clearly lead the way in the exciting first-round matches.

The Brit hasn't played that well this year but started to win recently and actually played well in Indian Wells. He didn't get lucky with the draw, having to play Andrey Rublev early, so he lost, and the draw in Miami wasn't that kinder.

Berrettini is never an easy out, even if he's only a week into his comeback. The Italian opted to return at the Phoenix Challenger and did well, making the final at the ATP Challenger tournament. He didn't win the trophy, but he looked pretty decent on his return.

Head-to-head:

Murray and Berrettini obviously played a handful of times, with the Italian leading the H2H 3-2. Their most recent match was played at last year's Australian Open, and it was actually a win by Murray, which was pretty surprising.

They're close in level right now because the Italian just came back, so he's a bit rusty, but he is obviously the better player overall these days.

Andy Murray Matteo Berrettini
2 H2H 3
62 Rank 142
36 Age 27
3-7 2024 W/L 0-0
736-257 Career W/L 156-86

Prediction:

I think this one is likely to go Berrettini's way because he looked really solid on his return. Murray is playing fine right now, but it's pretty clear that he's far from his best. He already spoke about his retirement, and all of his efforts will likely center around Wimbledon.

Prediction: Matteo Berrettini to win in three sets.
