Alexander Zverev has played tremendously at the Madrid Open over the years, and Denis Shapovalov will try to stop him this year.
Zverev has played really well at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid in the past, and he started off this year with a good win over Borna Coric. Shapovalov also did well in his first two matches in the Spanish capital but now faces a much tougher challenge.
There is a reason why both of them did well in the first matches. Both of them are good servers, and the serve, in particular, has been a massive weapon for the German during his good runs in Madrid.
Shapovalov is not as stable as the German, which could create problems for him, but let's see how he'll do.
Head-to-head:
Zverev won this event twice and made the final once more time outside of that. That's a mark that is topped hard, and Shapovalov certainly hasn't played as well recently. He didn't look as good as Zverev did in their first matches either, and he's generally not been the best against him.
Their most recent match was played in Halle last year, and it was an easy win for the home player. Shapovalov did beat Zverev three times, but those wins happened a while ago.
The most recent is over two years old, but he's proven he can beat him. It happened three times in eight matches so far. The match on clay happened in Madrid in 2018, and Zverev won 6-4, 6-1.

Prediction:
Overall, I think Zverev will win this match. He's the better player right now and has had a better year overall. The comfort of Madrid will certainly help him, and if the match does get complicated, I trust Zverev far more than Shapovalov.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in two sets.
