The stars of men's tennis will soon switch surfaces with the Monte-Carlo Masters, which is considered an important stop during the European clay swing.
The entry list for the 2024 edition has been revealed, and the excitement is palpable. Last year, Andrey Rublev became the unexpected champion of the event when he won his first Masters tournament by beating Holger Rune in a thrilling final.
Rublev faces an uphill battle to defend his crown when the Monte-Carlo Masters gets underway on April 7th and runs until April 14th at the Monte Carlo Country Club. The headliner for this year's tournament is Rafael Nadal, who has ruled over the Principality for a record 11 times.
Nadal's presence on the entry list is probably the worst-kept secret. Tournament director David Massey relayed the news following his one-on-one meeting with the Spaniard in California. The 37-year-old has already begun his preparations for the clay in what is looking like a farewell tour.
The top seed at the event is Novak Djokovic, who has won two titles. Surprisingly, the Serbian has not progressed beyond the quarterfinal since winning the tournament in 2015.
Among the challengers in Djokovic's wake are Carlos Alcaraz, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev - a first-time champion on the Italian clay last summer. Players like Stefanos Tsitsipas (two-time Monte-Carlo champion) and Casper Ruud are also clay-court threats.
The list of seeded players includes Monaco residents Holger Rune and Grigor Dimitrov, while American Taylor Fritz impressed during his last visit (semifinalist). Former US Open champion Marin Cilic joins Nadal in using a protected ranking to play his first tournament after injury.
Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz, and Alex de Minaur are also part of the fold. At least four players will be granted wild cards, while six more names will earn a spot through the qualifying draw. The complete entry list of the 2024 Monte-Carlos Masters can be seen below.
