Following the ban from the All England Club, Russian and Belarusian players won't be able to compete at the 2022 Wimbledon, however, preceding Grand Slam, Roland Garros will not take the same measures.
After Roland Garros organizers chose not to follow Wimbledon's approach, Russian and Belarusian players will be able to compete at the 2022 French Open.
Only last week, the All England Club banned players from Russia and Belarus from competing in the grass-court major. It implies that the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Aryna Sabalenka, and Andrey Rublev won't be able to compete in the British capital.
According to the French publication RMC Sport, Roland Garros will not seek to impose the same ban as the grass-court major. It means that Russian and Belarusian players will be permitted to compete next month in Paris, however, under a neutral flag.
The French Tennis Federation has yet to issue an official comment regarding the clay-court Grand Slam, which starts on May 22nd and runs until June 5th.
Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus were also banned from the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup team events; however, players were allowed to compete as neutral athletes. But Wimbledon made a decision that made many players speak out against it.
Among the highest-ranked ATP players, Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Zverev all disagreed with the decision, as Djokovic said that he couldn't support the decision.
"I cannot support the decision of Wimbledon, I think it is crazy. When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good."
At the 2022 Serbia Open where the Serbian and Rublev met in the final, the Russian also made a statement about the ban.
"The reasons they (Wimbledon) gave us had no sense, they were illogical. What is happening now is complete discrimination against us."
