Tennis icons John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova recently continued to take mind games into another level ahead of the Pickleball Slam 2.
The team of McEnroe and Sharapova will face that of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf in the second edition of the highly-anticipated Pickleball Slam that will take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, on February 4th.
The four contestants will vie to win a share of the $1 million prize money that will be on offer and have been actively promoting the event in recent weeks. WTA legends Sharapova and Graf will pick up the paddle for the first time in a match.
However, McEnroe and Agassi have already locked horns in the first edition of the Pickleball Slam. The temperamental McEnroe partnered with Michael Chang last April but lost the match to Agassi and compatriot Andy Roddick 3-1.
The two greats have since spoken about their newfound passion for the fastest-growing sport in the United States, with Agassi quoted as saying that he would play pickleball for as long as he could walk. For his part, McEnroe has returned to practice regularly ahead of his second match.
Agassi and McEnroe have engaged in lighthearted banter as the red-letter day is fast approaching. The 53-year-old recently mocked his countryman by stating that he "defeats himself" so he would not have to "overthink" his strategy in the match.
But it looks like McEnroe, together with the help of her new partner for this event, Sharapova, has landed on a team name. In a video shared on Instagram by the organizers of the event, McEnroe handed the former WTA No. 1 a scratch sheet with a list of their team names to choose from.
The Russian discarded most of the names on the list before stumbling on the one that generated a burst of boisterous laughter from McEnroe when she said, "Let's just go with 'Agassi Sucks."
