Caroline Wozniacki's return to the Billie Jean King Cup wasn't as good as he had hoped because she retired in her first match back.
A while ago, the news broke about Wozniacki playing at the Billie Jean King Cup, which was amazing to see because she's been a tremendous performer for Denmark in the past.
She also traveled without her family to Portugal, which was also the first time she had traveled since becoming a mom. The first match was against Austrian Sinja Kraus, who is ranked as the world no. 222 on the WTA Tour and proved a huge problem for Wozniacki, who was also battling the surface.
It was her first match back on clay since her comeback last year, and it didn't go well. She lost her serve early, after which Kraus was able to break once more and then once more to win the opening set 6-0.
It's very rare to see the Dane lose a set 0-6, especially against a player who arguably is not on her level right now. She was really struggling, and after dropping one more game, the Danish player called the doctor because he wasn't feeling well.
The weather wasn't too brutal; even though it was quite sunny and warm, the problems were likely caused by something else. After consulting the doctor, Wozniacki opted to retire because she really wasn't feeling well.
It's a shame that her first match back at the Billie Jean King Cup didn't go as planned because many expected her to be the main player for Denmark alongside Clara Tauson.
The country was expected to top the group, but now it's not clear whether Wozniacki will play again. Her retirement will count as a loss for Denmark, so it will be on her compatriot Tauson to level the score after Day 1.
