Iga Swiatek's trophy lift after winning the French Open was interrupted by the lid of the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup unexpectedly coming off.
Swiatek was an overwhelming favorite before the final against Karolina Muchova, but the world No. 1 had to win one of the most thrilling women's singles finals ever seen at Roland-Garros to secure her third French Open title.
It seemed like a routine victory was inevitable for Swiatek when she raced into a 6-2, 3-0 lead. Muchova simply could not handle the intensity of the best clay-court player in the world.
However, the Czech has been producing magic throughout the tournament, and she began to do so again. The 26-year-old showcased the variety that makes her one of the most watchable players in the world to take the second set 7-5.
The deciding set was incredible. Swiatek had to show her champion's mentality to recover from 3-4 and a break down to triumph 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. The match will live long in the memory of those present on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Swiatek earned the right to lift the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup, but that did not go as expected. As seen in the video below, the trophy lid came off while the world No. 1 lifted it into the air.
After being handed the trophy again, Swiatek decided to put the lid on the ground before lifting the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup without any issues at the second attempt.
The three-time French Open champion had given a classy winner's speech before that, congratulating Muchova for what she achieved and thanking those who had supported her throughout the tournament.
"First of all, congrats to Karolina. Members of my team are witnesses are that even since we first played, I knew that we're going to play these finals, and I hope we're going to have many more finals."
"So many people came from Poland, I really feel the love, so thank you. I know I've been saying it every year, but it's not really about the performance, I really love being here, and basically, it's my favourite place on Tour, so thank you guys."
