Maria Sakkari lost in the 2023 Citi Open final at the WTA 500 event in Washington, and she couldn't hold back her tears afterwards.
Without a doubt, Sakkari is one of the most talented players on the WTA Tour, and her consistent stay in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings only proves it. However, when it comes to the final matches, the Greek isn't that consistent.
Over the course of her career, Sakkari played in eight WTA finals, yet, she managed to win only one time. It was in Rabat four years ago, and in Washington this year, the Greek player had a chance to win the biggest trophy of her career.
Yet, it wasn't meant to be, as Coco Gauff, who also had only WTA 250 titles until now, won the tournament, denying the Greek player a great chance to win the WTA 500 title. During the trophy ceremony, Sakkari was really disappointed and struggled to hold back her tears.
"You know, I'm not going to lie. It's pretty disappointing but at the same time, a month ago I wouldn't think that I would be here, so thank you."
And despite being disappointed after the final, Sakkari still remained positive and she showed it during her press conference. The world no. 8 is positive about winning in the future, and despite losing in the final, the week in Washington was certainly a good one for her, considering previous results this year.
"You know, it wasn't meant to be this week, so it's gonna be, you know, soon. I'm pretty positive about it. Yeah, I was nervous. I didn't let myself play the tennis that I know that I can play, but at the same time, as I mentioned, she played really good and she played very good the entire tournament. Yeah, she deserved to win."
