Emma Raducanu has scaled up her training sessions and has been working on her baseline game just days before the start of the 2024 tennis season.
British sensation Raducanu has not played a competitive match since mid-April when Jelena Ostapenko thrashed her in the first round of the Stuttgart Open. Since then, she has been forced to undergo two surgeries on her wrists and one on her ankle.
The injuries have been bothering Raducanu for a while, and to prevent recurrence and prolong her career, she chose surgery rather than painkillers to alleviate the pain. It will be interesting to see how her body will respond to the tour's physical demands.
She has been busy handling off-court duties with the media and exploring some of her hobbies, which included playing the piano and globetrotting for adventure. Raducanu has also attended fashion events with her boyfriend, Carlo Agostinelli.
Raducanu has since returned to the UK to celebrate Christmas with family members and friends and shared a photo dump of herself exploring the nightlife during the holiday season. And on Saturday, Raducanu posted a video of her training session with the caption, "Enjoying this the most."
Raducanu is seen sharpening her ground game, hitting ferocious forehands and backhands from the baseline almost seamlessly inside the National Tennis Centre in London, where many British players usually train during the offseason.
The former US Open champion turned 21 last month and is on the verge of making her tennis return, which is scheduled at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Raducanu has accepted a wild card to play, which she berated during her last visit.
Raducanu will then head to Melbourne to compete in the Australian Open qualifying. She does not warrant an automatic main draw spot because of her lower Special Ranking, but she could still get into the main draw if there are four more withdrawals.
