Coco Gauff had a very interesting experience during her semifinal match at the 2023 WTA Finals when an umbrella broke into pieces in her hands.
If the 2023 WTA Finals haven't proven that tennis can not be played outside during a rainy season, then probably nothing ever will. Fans in Cancun saw multiple crazy rain delays, and unfortunately for players, tennis has rarely been the main talking point.
Most of the time, it was all about the organization. First, players couldn't practice on the main court, as it was still being built when they arrived in Cancun, but that was soon forgotten as the first matches got underway.
Immediately after the matches started, players called out the terrible court that was built in Cancun, but even if they could handle that, another unpredictable element entered the conversation - the weather.
Weather is something that no one can influence, yet the WTA could have arguably make a decision to play indoors during a rainy season, and players will certainly demand that for possible future events, because what they experienced in Cancun is unheard of.
Multiple times during their matches, player faced rain delays, as every player at the event experienced rain hitting the court during their match at least once.
While some faced only a brief delay, others had to leave the court, not once, not twice, but multiple times during the match. Amid all the rain delays, some of the craziest conditions were seen during Jessica Pegula's win over her doubles partner Coco Gauff.
The players had to deal with multiple rain delays, and during one of them, Gauff's umbrella literally broke to pieces while she held it in her hands. While initially surprise, the 19-year-old didn't produce any significant reaction, and the reason is simple.
The same exact thing happened to her, and also her doubles partner Pegula, in their doubles match the previous day in a span of a few minute. The fact that two umbrella's broke in Gauff's hands in a span of two days shows how crazy the conditions really were in Cancun.
