There has been some confusion recently about whether Venus Williams will participate in the Canadian Open. However, her place at the event in Toronto has now been confirmed.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion's last appearance in singles was at the Chicago Women's Open 11 months ago. She lost in straight sets in the opening round to Hsieh Su-wei.
Williams has been unable to play a singles match since then due to a leg injury. The recovery process was understandably slow since Williams is now 42 years old, making injuries harder to recover from.
She did play in the mixed doubles at this year's Wimbledon Championships alongside Jamie Murray, her first appearance at any tournament since the Chicago Women's Open. The pair were knocked out in the round of 16.
The Canadian Open's tournament organizers sent fans into a frenzy by leaking the news of Williams' participation in a reply to a fan who asked about the subject on social media.
"Yessss:)"
However, the tournament followed up with a correction and an apology later that day, saying the five-time Wimbledon champion would not be playing at the Canadian Open, creating confusion.
"She will unfortunately not be playing this year, but fingers crossed for an appearance."
That disappointed Williams' fans, who were excited by the initial leak about her participation. Fortunately, her fans can now celebrate again after the 42-year-old was officially confirmed to play in Toronto.
Venus will join her sister Serena in Southern Ontario. The Canadian Open is set to be Serena's second singles appearance since returning from 12 months out with an injury at Wimbledon.
Having both Williams sisters on the entry list for the tournament in Toronto is very exciting. The American pair attracts a unique amount of attention to the sport when they compete. Hopefully, they can play their part in creating a memorable event.
