Venus Williams has yet to play a singles match in 2022, and fans can't wait to see the legendary American back on the courts, but the Canadian Open organizers made them happy too soon.
Williams teamed up with Jamie Murray at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, and they were successful in their first match. Yet, they lost already in the second round of the mixed doubles tournament in London.
After her short appearance at Wimbledon, it seems that Williams might play at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto, as the tournament organizers might have unintentionally leaked the news of her participation.
Only recently, her sister, Serena Williams, played at the Wimbledon Championships, and for a long time, tennis fans weren't aware that the legendary American would make her return to tennis at the All England Club.
Venus obviously knew about it, and once the announcement of Serena's participation was made public, she shared her relief as she didn't have to keep the secret anymore.
Now, it appears that there was another secret that might have been revealed earlier than planned. One of the fans who couldn't wait for Venus' comeback asked the organizers of the tournament in Toronto if Venus Williams would be playing at the tournament.
The social media team didn't hesitate and answered, "yessss:)". The happy fan posted it on Twitter and the tournament quickly took a step back, stating it was a mistake.
The tournament organizers released a statement saying that while Venus won't play this year, they are still hoping for her appearance, which was a weird way to phrase a statement.
"She will unfortunately not be playing this year, but fingers crossed for an appearance."
Currently, Venus Williams is not on the entry list for the event. However, she might still receive a wild card, and in a few weeks, fans will know if it was really just a mistake by the tournament or if they gave away the surprise too early.
