Many have wondered whether Ashleigh Barty will ever return to professional sport, and the three-time Grand Slam champion refused to rule out the possibility of playing professional golf.
Barty was one of the most popular tennis players in the world. Her unique and watchable playing style won her titles at the 2019 French Open, 2021 Wimbledon, and 2022 Australian Open.
She shocked the tennis world by retiring from the sport in March. Barty was the world No. 1 at the time, and some felt she could dominate during 2022 after starting the season by winning her home Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
However, the 26-year-old clearly thought long and hard about her decision. She seems content with her move to step away from tennis, meaning it was the right call and one that should be respected.
Some fans have speculated that Barty retired from tennis to pursue a professional golf career. The Australian spoke to Sky Sports about that topic, saying she is unsure whether she has the commitment required to be a professional.
“You never have that answer. I love the sport, it has been a hobby of mine for a long time, but I don’t know if I will ever be fully committed to going out on the range and doing the required practice and the discipline, but I love the sport.”
Barty also outlined the differences between tennis and golf. She said tennis was a fast-paced, reactive sport, while golf is played at a much lower tempo.
“With tennis it is so different. Tennis is a quick pace, reactive, receptive sport. Golf is the opposite. It is slow, you have time to think, you have control and time to analyse what you need to do.“It is a polar opposite, and almost a form of meditation when I was playing tennis.“It is a lot of fun. It can be frustrating but I really enjoy it.”
