Bianca Andreescu is remembered for overcoming Serena Williams in two finals in 2019, but the 22-year-old also remembers something after their final in Toronto that spread a positive message worldwide.
The Canadian won her maiden Grand Slam title in September 2019 at the US Open by defeating Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the final. This prevented the 23-time major champion from equaling Margaret Court's Grand Slam record.
Andreescu also defeated Williams a few weeks before that at her home tournament at the Rogers Cup. Winning a WTA-1000 tournament on home soil was a big moment for Andreescu, but it happened in sad circumstances.
Unfortunately, Williams had to retire from the match at 1-3 down in the first set due to back spasms. Although most of the crowd were supporting Andreescu, fans were disappointed to see the final end so quickly.
However, fans in the stadium and watching at home were heartened by a superb gesture from Andreescu when she consoled Williams after the match, realizing what a challenging moment it was for the American.
Andeescu recently spoke about the incident, saying she hoped her actions comforted Williams after the disappointment of retiring from the final.
"That final was kind of crappy because of what she (Serena Williams) had to go through; she was very emotional at the end. Being able to be there and kind of comfort her in a way, I hope I did, at least."
The former US Open champion also remembers the considerable reaction on social media to her actions. Many people saw it as an example of women supporting each other, which Andreescu loves.
"It was super amazing because the (response) that happened afterwards on social media of 'women supporting other women' was incredible and it made me realize a lot about how there should be more of that not only in our sport but in our world."
