It seems like Venus Williams will not be joining her sister, Serena Williams, in retirement based on comments she made in a recent video.
Venus and Serena returned from long absences during this year's grass-court seasons. Serena had not played since the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, while Venus' absence was from August 2021 until this year's Wimbledon.
Many fans were left stunned when Serena cut her comeback short and announced her retirement from professional tennis at the US Open. She bid farewell after a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic in New York.
Serena and Venus, who won an incredible 14 Grand Slam doubles titles as a partnership, played together at the US Open, losing in the first round. Although her last singles and doubles matches were emotional, Serena has not ruled out returning to tennis.
Venus is Serena's older sister and 42 years old. Some assumed she would follow Serena into retirement since one existing without the other on the WTA Tour almost seems unimaginable for fans who have watched them play with and against each other so many times.
However, Venus sounded confident about returning in a recent YouTube video. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion said she has been practicing since the US Open and promised to tell fans when she decides to play again.
"A lot of people have been asking me... 'are you gonna play again?' I love tennis and I would like to play again and I will let you know exactly when."
"I've been honestly hitting the court a lot and let me tell you when I hit the court... right after the doubles match that we played at the US Open. I immediately booked the court the next day and I went to every single practice in New York. I hit indoors and I've been hitting ever since."
