Former ATP star Tommy Haas thinks Serena Williams could reverse her decision to retire after the improvements she made after returning from an injury.
Williams sustained a severe injury in the opening round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships after slipping. That issue ruled her out of singles action for 12 months, but she worked hard to return.
The former WTA world No. 1 made a comeback at this year's Wimbledon Champions. Although she lost a close match against Harmony Tan, her rustiness and physical difficulty in the third set after being sidelined for so long were understandable.
All the work Williams did to return meant the tennis legend shocked fans after announcing she would retire at the US Open. Admittedly, she was 40 years old at the time, but the move was still surprising.
Williams bid farewell to tennis after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has already hinted at a possible return to tennis since that moment.
Speaking to Eurosport Germany, Haas outlined how Williams might make a comeback because she left the sport after making some improvements at the US Open, including beating the No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
"But I have the feeling that she is going to come back and say, 'I'm going to play one more time'. She came so close to playing really well again and going far, so I think deep down it really annoys her."
"It will mostly depend on how it looks mentally, how she feels physically and whether she has the desire to torture herself like that again after achieving so much. Serena also does a lot of things off the court and is a mother. "She might really be thinking about whether she wants to try again. I may be wrong because I'm not that close [to her]."
