Simona Halep becomes 3rd highest earner in WTA tennis moving ahead of Sharapova

Simona Halep is out of the Madrid Open but her solid run in the Spanis capital allowed her to move up on the all-time career earnings list.

Halep has been a very good tennis player for a while now and obviously winning events and having deep runs frequently allows a player to win the higher amounts of prize money events have to offer. The added publicity through the success allows players to earn outside of the courts as well but when career earnings are considered, only event winnings are counted.

For Halep the number is staggering and some more prize money in Madrid this week allowed her to overtake Maria Sharapova for number 3 on the list. Halep has now earned $38,842,886 in her career ahead of Sharapova who has earned $38,777,962. Number two on that list is Venus Williams with $42,280,540 and that seems like a realistic number to catch for Halep. The undisputed number one of course is Serena Williams with $94,518,971.

If she continues to play well she will probably overtake Venus Williams while Serena Williams seems impossible unless she wins 10 grand slams in a row. Unlikely at this point in her career.
