Serena Williams found herself in the midst of drama and controversy within the Formula One arena after her recent remark about Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was responding to comments made by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Ahead of last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Mercedes team principal spoke candidly to PA news agency when evaluating Lewis Hamilton's chances of winning a record-breaking eighth championship.
Wolff asserted that he was fuelled by "personal anger" to help the British driver achieve this historic milestone that eluded him back in 2021 in quite dubious circumstances. Hamilton has won seven world championships on the race track (level with Michael Schumacher for the most titles).
"We are living in a hamster wheel where time passes so quickly that it doesn’t feel like it has been two years. You can see how quickly the pecking order changes. But, we have to look forward, learn from the past, and push now to make Lewis win quickly again. I have a personal anger and drive to make him win the eighth title because he should have it."
The jury is still out on whether the 38-year-old should have won more than seven championships in the past, but the general consensus by many fans is that he ought to have won the 2021 world title after the last race in Abu Dhabi ended in controversy.
Max Verstappen snatched the title from Hamilton's grasp in the final lap. Serena and Lewis Hamilton do share a cordial and friendly relationship.
The American tennis legend has previously labeled the Briton as "the greatest driver that our generation has seen" and has been to quite a number of Formula One races to express her support for him.
Serena made headlines with her recent post when she wrote a cheeky response just below the post which contained Toto Wolff's comments stating that Hamilton "should" have won nine titles in Formula One.
"He should have had 9 already. But...lemme be quiet."
